1.1 Introduction to Computer Fundamentals – What is a Computer? (3 Marks)
A computer is an automatic electronic device used for performing calculations and controlling operations that can be expressed in numerical or logical form. According to the Oxford Dictionary, it is defined as “an automatic electronic apparatus for making calculations or controlling operations expressible in numerical or logical terms.”
A computer works as a data processor. It accepts input in the form of data or instructions, stores it in memory, processes it using arithmetic and logical operations, and produces the output as useful information. Though input and output are in alphanumeric form, internally the computer converts data into binary digits, processes it, and then converts it back into a human-readable form.
